Life in a hospital....

When I read Ravishankar's comment suggesting me to write about life inside hospital and how a day goes about here i felt it wasnt a bad idea and decided to keep the topic for future. Call it luck or destiny I have been having a pretty busy time since the minute I entered the unit at 3:55 PM last evening till about a few minutes back. I decided to take a break and I could not think of another topic at this moment..(If u r wondering why the hell am i blogging in the midst of a busy night, the answer is here - "a break to refresh myself to be active for another 8 hours"). Being busy is nothing new and I thoroughly enjoy working for long hours till one or many demoralising things happen simlutaneously or in series.

The structure and nature of the work is almost the same, be it day or night with few minor differences. Invariably the duty starts with what we call "Rounds" that includes detailed examination of the children/kids/patients, their parameters and a "Plan" is formulated for what must be the next course of action. The plan is usually made after a detailed discussion about the events that had taken place in the period before the person beginning duty arrives, what is expected line of action and results.

The plans made are neither like rules (which are often not followed) nor a formality, but are"guidelines"that helps the duty person to keep things in order. While most of the time we stick on to the plans made, situations do arise where we need to change or remodel our original plans. These changes happen based on our assessment. " Assess and Re assess" is the key while working in a intensive/critical care unit.

The duty ends with a Rounds, during which whatever I mentioned in the above two paragraphs happen again. This cycle happens round the clock, 7 days a week and all through the year. It appears just that simple while writing and it is infact so when everything is fine and in order. But that luxury doesnt happen daily. Infact what i have mentioned as luxury are those "boring"days, when you feeling like running away somewhere or even changing profession!!!!!!!!!!!!!
